I was super busy, so look forward to two posts next week. I’ll be post from the lovely Myrtle Beach in South Carolina!

This week, I thought I would talk about the legal system. I am a legal studies minor and a lot of Fantasy Court is based on the legal system. I mean, who doesn’t love that it asks for a ‘subpoena’ from the opposing side. Now you can totally pretend that you knew that it meant to get a testimony!

Anyways, I thought I would pull out some interesting court cases that I have talked about in class. The legal system is always a scapegoat for being ridiculous, so feel free to weigh in!

1) Everyone has heard about the case involving a lady suing McDonald’s for her spilling hot coffee on herself. Actually, in Linebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurant, the 79 year old woman sued for her medical bills (totaling about $20,000) after she spend weeks in the hospital with third degree burns. When McDonald’s refused to pay, she brought them to court. It was the jury that decided to award her $160,000. What do you guys think? Was McDonald’s wrong for keeping their coffee at almost 200 degrees Fahrenheit?

2) Herbert Cohen created a musical song called “Merry-Go-Round.” Paramount requested the use of the song in it’s movie “Medium Cool.” The two parties signed a license allowing Paramount to use the song in theaters and on broadcast televisions. While in post production, videocassettes came out, so Paramount decided to sell the movie, with the music still on it. Cohen sued them for copyright infringement. He won! The court said that their contract wasn’t broad enough (when do they ever say that)! Maybe it’s just me, but broad contracts are pretty scary.

Have any other crazy court cases? Let me know! I’ll be adding another post with some other cases!

:) Rachael

Roommate Drama

Hey Everyone!

So this post is a little late, I am actually en route to my state track meet tonight! My team will be competing tomorrow and Saturday to defend our state title from last year. I will be competing in the pentathlon tomorrow; wish me luck!

Anyway, this week I thought I’d write about something almost anyone can relate to: roommates. Right now, I am living in a matchbox-sized dorm with another girl who is also in my major. We fight about the usual stuff: chores, waking each other up, using the big mirror, accidentally locking each other out, ect. I decided to throw a survey up on Facebook to see what my friends fought with their roommates about. I got the following information:

How people met their roommates:

11.1 % Orientation

60% Friends

13.3% Online

15.6% Random Selection

Do you guys ever fight?

54.3% said that they fought with their roommate on at least one occasion. (To that other 45.7%, how do you do that? Do you even talk to your roommate? Tell me your secret!)

The top three things roommates fight about?

1. Cleanliness

2. Chores

3. Being Loud

I also asked if anyone had any interesting stories about fights with their roommates and I got the following answers:

“I was doing homework and my roommate decided that it was time to go to sleep at 8:30 and just shut off all the lights! I almost threw my hair brush at her!”

“She wanted the room to hook up with a guy and I had no where to go.”

“My roommate is super religious. He never swears, never drinks, and never watches TV. He sucks and we never get along.”

“My roommate acts more like my mother than my roommate!”

Have any drama with your roommates? Take them to court! Stay tuned for a little fiasco between me and my roommate!

:) Rachael

My name is Rachael and I am a sophomore majoring in Integrated Marketing with a minor in Legal Studies at Ithaca College in Upstate New York. I am in love with my little Italian Greyhound, Starbucks, who lives back on my family farm in Massachusetts. I like to eat candy by the pound, so I run at IC so I can still fit through doors. I compete in the heptathlon (for the non-trackies, that’s hurdles, high jump, long jump, shotput, 200 meters, javelin, and 800 meters). I hate lemons in my water and love sushi.

This semester I am interning for FantasyCourt.com, an online dispute forum. I’m very excited. I grew up the oldest of three girls. From the clothes stealing to the bathroom hogging, believe me, we had disputes. My stepfather is a lawyer and he would make us argue our cases in front of him. With the internet and social media exploding, I think it’s time that there is a way to resolve problems on the internet. (Check out my current case with my sister about her stealing my clothes!)

I will be blogging about celebrity fights, interesting cases I see on Fantasy Court, my own disputes and anything you guys are interested in! Stay tuned!

Are we ready to let our personal networks solve our problems?

Everyone does it, quietly think to yourself in the middle of a squabble …“I’m obviously right and any one of our friends would agree with me”. Well…you no longer have to keep your thoughts to yourself. With its launch this week, Toronto start-up FantasyCourt.com will become the first and only social dispute resolution tool on the internet. Now you can finally see who is right AND what everyone else thinks.

FantasyCourt.com provides a platform for users take disputes direct to the community and have their personal networks crowdsource a resolution. This isn’t just any voting site. FantasyCourt strives to build its version of “Social Justice” by upholding its own set of community rights. No dispute goes live to the community without both parties submitting their individual cases and voters are always visible so users can clearly see who voted on each side. Finally, participants are free to add consequence to each verdict by negotiating a challenge with their counterpart.

“Whether consciously or not, people, especially younger generations are turning to their networks for information and advice…. where to go on Saturday night, what to wear, who to support…and it makes sense they turn to those same people to help resolve their dispute” said CEO, Rob Crnkovic.

FantasyCourt.com is paying specific attention to the college demographic and targeting that segment through a unique grassroots campaign. FC is liaising with business and technology students at universities and empowering them to build awareness in the community.

Reed Bracken, a 3rd Year Business student at Wilfrid Laurier University is excited by the site and his role as a community manager. “Feedback has been great! I don’t think you ever have more disputes then living with a bunch of people at College. There is no end to what we can take to the court. It’s pretty compelling when the people you hang out with everyday vote out a verdict”

As the social internet becomes a society in and of itself, perhaps there is need for justice within that social world. FantasyCourt.com brands itself as a new breed of Justice, built for a new generation in a new world. I guess if you don’t agree …you can always ask your network what they think….

Social Justice for all!

That’s right! Case Closed
Issues between roommates. Case Closed
That never ending sports debate Case Closed
Who’s turn it is to host dinner Case Closed

….. and on and on and on…

Fantasy Court helps facilitate fair, fun and Democratic justice, however crazy your case may be. Having the Court of Public Opinion rule on your case is simple.

We could not be more excited with the initial success and buzz we are receiving. In our first two weeks, we have resolved some amazing disputes in a timely and unbiased manner, which is exactly what we set out to do. As well, we partnered with MLSE’s Team Up Foundation for the next year (Are you interested in donating your time? If so, send us an email). Finally, one of the most exciting turn of events during our launch week, was when our CEO was asked to participate on a radio show, called “The Program” to discuss how we are changing the game for dispute resolution.

The feature dispute that garnered the most voting and commenting was Will Carroll (SI.com Contributor) vs. Jeff Kinch (NFLFanFreeAgent Contributor) as they went head-2-head on which sport is the best fantasy sport? Baseball and all of its complexity edged out Football and all of its simplicity by a count of 15 to 14. Who ever said men were simple? Check out the closed case here: http://fantasysportcourt.com/dispute/fbbf308cf6a55ecfd4bc8811dea75508

The most popular dispute, which is still active, is the dispute where Tim McMenamin brought Robert Crnkovic to court to settle the score on an expired bet. At the time this communication was written, the count was a dead-lock 20 to 20 (57 comments). VOTE here, if you haven’t already: http://fantasysportcourt.com/dispute/f545b613bdaf88d92c99045b713a8680

Interestingly but not surprisingly, as witnessed by the latter dispute we are seeing http://www.fantasysportcourt.com being used to resolve disputes outside of fantasy sports. We will continue to support this assuming that is the direction YOU (our community of jurors) would like to take it. Ultimately, we just set out to provide our community with a platform to resolve disputes in an unbiased and timely fashion….looks like we are succeeding and that is all THANKS TO YOU!

We announced on September 22nd, 2011 that we will be donating $1.00 CDN to the MLSE Team Up Foundation (mlseteamupfoundation.org/) for the first 500 disputes entered into http://www.fantasysportcourt.com. So far, we are at 36 and counting. Please pass this on to your friends so we can get to 500 as soon as possible.

Please continue to provide us with your candid feedback either through our website or by emailing us directly. We want to make resolving your disputes the best experience possible.

I count myself among the very few Mayweather “apologists” in North America right now (Note: I even once got into a bit of a fight with my wife when after an episode of 24/7-Mayweather/Mosley showcased Mayweather’s arrogance she innocently asked “how can anyone cheer for Mayweather?”. My shortsighted response of “you’re absolutely right, only people who know something about boxing would cheer for Mayweather” was dripping with condescension and resulted in a very awkward breakfast the next morning) but I feel confident waving his flag again today.

A few declarations:

1) There is zero question that the left hook-right cross knockout combo after the final warning was legal

2) Zero question

3) It may not have been the most sportsmanlike thing for Mayweather to do

4) The headbutt from Ortiz was without question the most blatant and ill-intentioned headbutt I’ve seen in 30 years of watching boxing

5) A fighter that was giving up 15 pounds and 10 years to his opponent - an opponent that was touted as being the tougher, harder fighter – reacted to a vicious headbutt delivered out of frustration completely within the rules.

The most important factor in forming my opinion though is one final declaration: Victor Ortiz wanted out.

Please know that I like and respect Victor Ortiz as a boxer and as a person (his back story is as uplifting as any in boxing) but he was in no way outfitted to challenge in this fight. Much like Tyson in his oft discussed ear-ingesting bout against Holyfield, Ortiz resorted to non-boxing tactics to get back at his opponent. He fought gamely and with a plan, he came forward the first three rounds and tried to slug it out with Floyd. When Mayweather continued to land his right hand lead at will and weather Ortiz’s best flurries Victor knew it was over.

It’s very odd that a prize fighter like Ortiz would leave a clinch when the ref said “box” and keep his hands down – he had to know that Floyd had tasted blood (both figuratively and literally) and would want to exact revenge. The most telling part, though, was Ortiz’s reaction after the knockout. No matter how nice this guy is there’s no way a prideful boxer would be smiling and telling his corner “it’s okay” after a supposed sucker-punch knockout if he felt it was unfair.

Ortiz was going to lose that fight regardless – the fact that he did so in such a sympathetic manner only serves to help his legend. But in no way, should it hurt Floyd Mayweather’s.

MLSE Team Up Foundation "Partnership" - signed, sealed, delivered...

At Fantasy Sport Court, Inc (FSC) giving back to the communities in which we work, play, & live is important to us personally. In fact, it was woven into our fabric even before Fantasy Sport Court was an idea at the bottom of a glass of cold Canadian beer. To that point, we are thrilled to announce that we have chosen to support the MLSE Team Up Foundation for the upcoming year.

We will be donating $1.00 CDN for the first 500 disputes entered into www.fantasysportcourt.com! So far, we are at 35 disputes, so please suport the cause and get your disputes resolved at the same time. We believe this is a positive spin on the phrase “charity case.”

We had 3 pillars we used to evaluate the foundations we were considering;

1. We wanted the foundation to be local.

2. We wanted to combine Youth & Sport.

3. We wanted a cause we could support with our hard earned money but also our time.

MLSE Team Up Foundation aligned perfectly with all three, they have;

1. Invested over a half a million dollars in 4 GTA rinks (local)

2. Disbursed over $1,369,000 to charities that provide children and youth, of all abilities, access to sports and recreation. (youth & sport)

3. Refurbished 4 rinks, 2 courts and 1 pitch through their legacy program in the last 12 months, and has 9 projects planned over the next 12 months. (time)

We are no experts - but some of our friends are pretty smart. In addition to helping establish precedents on high profile topics though featured disputes - some of these beauties are guest blogging some thoughts on making you a better player.

Todays Lesson Comes from Ryan Lester of www.Lesterslegends.com Ryan is giving us the low -down on his Bye Week Strategy!

“You spend countless hours preparing for your fantasy draft. You may rank your players by position. You may separate them into several tiers. You probably participate in a mock draft or twelve. You study websites, fantasy books, and sports talk radio to the point where you can almost blindly participate in a fantasy draft without the aid of any sort of cheatsheet.

You’re cruising along in your draft as the players you were targeting fall into your lap. Suddenly you’re faced with your first dilemma. You drafted Shady McCoy in the first round, Hakeem Nicks in the second round, and now you have the opportunity to take Tom Brady in the third round? Do you pull the trigger?

All of your research suggests that if you don’t take him now you’ll likely be forced to drop a tier when you get around to taking a quarterback. You have to take Brady. What good reason do you have notto take him?

As your turn is coming up you glance at the bye weeks and notice that Shady, Nicks, and Brady all share the same bye week. If you pair that trio up you’re setting yourself to have no chance to win in Week 7. You might as well start your team off with a big L in the loss column before the season even begins.

I say go for it. Heck, take Stevie Johnson in the fourth, Fred Jackson in the fifth, and Vernon Davis in the sixth as well.

You’re not the 1972 Dolphins. You’re not playing for perfection. I know you don’t ever want to concede defeat, but the most important game of the year comes in Week 16 in most leagues. Last time I checked there are no bye weeks that late in the year.

Don’t give away value just because you put yourself in a bind one week.

In actuality, you may be better off loading up for one bye week. Sure, you will be the laughing stock of your league one week, but you’ll basically be at full strength (barring injury) the rest of the season. While everyone is scrambling week-to-week to fill their bye week holes, you can simply play your best guys every week.

Plus, if you do win you throw away week you can forever hold that over the head of your opponent.

I say don’t be afraid of pairing up players with the same bye week. I say embrace it and put yourself in a position to dominate on any given Sunday.”

Ryan Lester from www.Lesterslegends.com . LestersLegends.com is a fantasy sports site dedicated to helping you win your Fantasy Baseball, Football or Basketball league. Its a go-to for all things fantasy but we pay special attention to his waiver wire suggestions - shout out to LestersLegends for our 2009 Derek Anderson pick-up that helped us win the title boo- yah baby!!! He’s good Sh$t!!

Never Have 2 Fav Teams & Letting Your Boss Win Isn't Great Either

Well, first things first, Chris Wassel has dropped the mitts and is circling the bench calling on the whole team and everyone’s looking at each other saying “You got this, right Mac?”. You kidding me? What is this men’s league, “I’ve got to work in the morning” BS. Not here in “The Court”. This is your Conway Triple Deck Moment!!!

Well, we have one in the books!! Jon Dove from Bleacher Report took the first featured debate from Dave Golokhov from Ask Men. Final Verdict in the Court - It is Unacceptable as a Fan to cheer for 2 teams in the same league. The precedents been set! All you mo-mo’s who cheer for a new team every Playoffs because you’ve “loved them forever” are full of crap!! Don’t go buy that brand new Jersey this year, save the money and throw old faithful on. You may not think it looks as cool, but we respect you more for it!

Latest Featured Dispute is now up. Paul Greco is like a Bull in a China Shop built for Ants!! He goes jugular every time. Even if it’s his boss. Andrew Findlater, who makes a great living help world class brands stay clean and mean makes a great argument for a little Jekyll Hyde action. Maybe, it’s worthwhile to leave the mad-hatter fantasy lunatic at home when you drive into the office?

Check out “Is Fantasy at work, like golf at work, do you always let the boss win?”

http://fantasysportcourt.com/dispute/5297ed400a80695777d44b3bb30f4557

ROCK THE VOTE - and all you hockey players out there - make a run at Cincott!!

TOUGH CASE? ANYONE HAVE THE STONES

Featured Disputes will be popping up on the regular at FantasySportCourt. Jon Dove from Bleacher report is out to an early lead against Dave Golokhov in our opener and we have Mark St Amant and Brad Gagnon in the on-deck circle ready to rock this weekend. Now, we may be new and a little thick - but even we didn’t see a dilemma so soon. In most cases, there is always someone ready to throw down. We are bit impartial but our confirmed guests are like studs. Gamers like Paul Greco, Ryan Lester and Dennis Bernstein are ready to tussle on any issue anytime and will prove it over the next week on some awesome topics.

Hoping someone takes some inspiration from those guys and can step-up. Most times you go to the jury but in some rare circumstances, you have to settle out of court. We don’t want to do that so we need someone to challenge our man Chris Wassel. He just went yard! Leave it to one of our favorite Hockey Writers to drop the mitts and toss Hecter Connecter out of the Castle One Punch.

Here is why Chris wrote that all is NOT fair in Fantasy Trash Talk - we tend to agree with him, but that may be because no one has tried to convince us otherwise…

“Many of us, ladies and gentlemen, have been in more leagues than we count. Trash talking is an essential part of the fantasy sports experience. Legends have been formed from amazing comebacks but more than anything, the trash talking that illustrates the wit of the truest champions.
If you have been in a league long enough, you have seen the good, bad, and ugly sides of trash talking. The question becomes what is actually going “too far”? There has been many borderline instances that I have seen with only a few crossing the line.
So let’s rumble into this full guns drawn! What is too personal for trash talking? Let’s make this simple.
Here are some of the points that just go too far. Come tell us if we are right on or out of bounds here:
1. Children
2. Past or present relationships
3. Mental or physical ailments
Those are really the only ones that are off limits. In closing, we ask if those are the only things that truly the worst of the worst.
Come and bring the heat if you dare! But first, here is your case study. In a high stakes league last year, a trade was made between me (1st place) and a guy that was in second place just behind me. There was a player that took care of a slight weakness in the goaltending position. The GM in second place had an extra netminder to spare and the trade was consummated.
The reality is I gave up a little more in the deal. Two days later, the guy loses the #1 goalie in the league (Martin Brodeur) to an elbow injury that knocked him out four months. Here is the issue. Brodeur had a twinge in his elbow a few days before but brushed it off. The guy claimed because I do write for a few sites about the Devils that I had inside information (fantasy ethics dictate inside info has to be disclosed within league). There was no knowledge that the elbow was hurt in any way.
As a result, he launched into a diatribe about my mentally handicapped aunt privately to me. Throwing in F bombs and the dreaded R word, it was behavior that went too far. Yes I did report it to the rest of the league and he was subsequently not invited back. The question becomes did I get too sensitive or was I right in things that you just do not say ever?
Let us have it ladies and gentlemen of the jury and thanks for your time!”

Anyone want a shot?? Ping us at robert@fantasysportcourt.com

About Chris Wassel —- Quite possibly one of the craziest Hockey writer/analysts out there. He Hosts The Program on BTR’s FSC. He also writes for RotoRob, The Daily Faceoff, Inside Hockey, and MUCH more trying to bring Hockey Fantasy to the regular fan. The best way to describe Chris is brash, in your face, and not afraid to express his opinion.

Featured Disputes

One of the cool things we will be doing during launch is feature some of the Experts, Guru’s, Writers, Bloggers and celebs that we’ve followed every week for years!!

Since we debate everything, we thought it would be fun to see thing what the experts thought about certain topics and let them go head to head - with the community playing jury and delivering a final verdict!!!

Thanks to our first two Guests in the Feature Dispute! Jon Dove from The Bleacher Report and Dave Golokhov from AskMen.com. What a way to start it off. Both have written awesome cases on whether or not its acceptable to have 2 Favorite teams in one league.

It should get even more interesting later this week with Paul Greco - Host of SiriusXM’s FantasyPros911 Show on XM 87 / Sirius 210, Dennis Bernstein - Director of US Operations and Senior Writer at TheFourtPeriod, Chris Wassel - Host for The Program on BTR’s FSC and noted hockey writer, Brad Gagnon - The Score’s NFL blogger and my vote for Canada’s best NFL analyst, Mark St Amant - He’s done it all in fantasy writing and published THE best selling fantasy football narrative of all time - siick - “Committed; Confessions of a Fantasy Football Junkie”, Ryan Lester of LestersLegends.com, one of our go-to sites for insight and some new just confirmed surprise guests.

”Is fantasy at work, like golf, do you let the boss win?”

“Do you need at least one player from your Favorite Team on your fantasy team or is that a fantasy no-no?”

“Is fantasy undermining traditional fan values?”

As a Fan, I am so stoked for each one of these. Everyone wrote LIGHTS OUT cases!! It will be awesome to see what the jury decides!!

If you are interested in being in a featured dispute or have some great topics you want taken to court - ping us at Robert@fantasysportcourt.com

court is now in session!

Our first day being “open for business” was an incredible day for us. We were thrilled with the traffic, we didn’t experience any major bugs and our featured dispute got off and running with two great heavy weight disputers leading the way! Thank you Jon & Dave.

I want to remind the commissioners that they have a chance to win an authentic jersey of their choice just by completing the commissioner info. As we look ahead, we want to encourage all of our community members aka jurors to help spread the word for our Court of Public Opinion. The more jurors we have, the more votes your disputes get, which means a better outcome for all of you.

If you know a “heavy weight” disputer(s) or think you would like to be a part of our featured dispute, please email robert@fantasysportcourt.com
